Sonya Loya @ A Taste of Honey

A Great Storyteller with a Great Story to Tell:  A week before Chanukka began in December last year, Ruidoso resident Sonya Loya was selected along with nine other Jews from around the world to participate in the first Sephardic Storytellers Slam at the Triade Theater in New York City.

Never heard of the Sephardic Storytellers Slam?  Neither had Abq Jew - but you can read the New York Times article here.

And you can watch the video (of course there's a video!) here.

You can read more about Sonya Loya here, in an article that recently appeared in the Conservative Movement's CJ Magazine.

But here is what you really need to know: Sony Loya will be teaching a course, Anusim and Crypto-Judaism, at A Taste of Honey.  Anusim is a legal category of Jews in halakha (Jewish religious law) who were forced or coerced to abandon Judaism against their will, typically while forcibly converted to another religion. Learn about the worldwide movement from an insider with a personal perspective and story.

You can prepare for Anusim and Crypto-Judaism by reading through the Crypto-Jewry page at

If you do not find this topic fascinating - there are 24 other classes to choose from - plus Michael Wex!

Thanks for the great reviews. I have to say, for my first time at Taste of Honey, it was a great experience. Certainly worth the 3 hour drive each way in weather conditions of snow and rain to be there. My class had more folks show up than the registration sheet showed. It was a very productive class when a local rabbi came UN-expected and told me afterwards he was on board to help any way he could! The class interacted until 5pm, with questions and reading material from the history of the Inquisition along with the current effects on the descendants wanting to return back to Judaism today.

It was good to see every one and feel the great learning & teaching energy.

Shabbat shalom from snowy Ruidoso,
Sonya A. Loya
