Tikkun Leyl Shavuot
Congregation B'nai Israel
Tuesday May 14
7:00 pm
Rabbi Arthur Flicker of Congregation B'nai Israel invites the whole community to participate:
This month, Congregation B'nai Israel will host the community’s Erev Shavuot Service and Torah Study.
For several years now, our community has come together to share in prayer and study as we begin our celebration of the giving of Torah at Mt. Sinai.Abq Jew notes that it's always possible that the Tikkun participants will run out of material at some point, probably around 4:00 in the morning. Too early for Hashkama Minyan, but way too late to just call it a night.
Shavuot is one of the least observed of the Jewish Holy Days. There is nothing seemingly dramatic about its celebration. We don’t sleep outside in a special hut. We don’t have round raisin challah. We don’t eat matzah and have an ornate meal. We eat dairy products and study Torah.
The lack of a seemingly exciting unique element for the holiday, makes its observance a little more difficult. That is what makes our coming together as a community so important. Sharing our voices, our perspectives of Torah and our participation enhances the holiday for each of us and all of us.
Take advantage of this community service on Tuesday, May 14 at Congregation B'nai Israel. Tammy Kaiser, Director of Lifelong Learning at Congregation Albert, will be the speaker. It promises to be wonderful and educational.
Use the joy and scholarship of that opening evening to encourage your attendance at Shavuot services on Wednesday and Thursday mornings. Let us celebrate revelation and the blessings that the experience at Sinai has left for all of us.
If you remember Tikkun Leyl Shavuot & The Elements - that is one way to make the night (or early morning) pass profitably. Here is another: Stay Up All Night!
So now you're thinking - maybe I will stay up all night and study and learn and greet Shavuot morning happy and refreshed. Abq Jew knows of just the thing:
Tikkun Leyl Shavuot
Home of Rabbi Chavah Carp
Tuesday May 14
10:00 pm
As our Tikkun (healing), we stay up and study all night (though people are free to leave early as they wish). We will meet at 10:00 p.m. (after the community service), and study and share wisdom and prayers until sunrise.
Kindly bring a dairy (or pareve) dish to share (espresso will be made available, but you may bring your coffee thermos); reading glasses and a readiness to study some of Judaism’s core spiritual texts.
These will be a few selections from the Tikkun Leyl Shavuoth text of the circle of Kabbalist Rabbi Isaac Luria of Tz’fat -- a compendium of snippets from Torah, Prophets, and Writings, Mishnah, and later Kabbalistic texts – made available in translation for the first time via the last 22 years’ translation work of Rabbi R. Karpov, Ph.D., one of the first ten woman rabbis to hold a solo United Synagogue pulpit.
Just before Sunrise we will take a short walk to the open space and see the sunrise as we tried to do thousands of years ago at Mt. Sinai. Requested $10 donation.
Prayers go up and Blessings come down
